Acts 8:26-40
Often when we speak of being led by the Spirit, we mean that the Holy Spirit nudges or directs our thoughts and decisions and actions to conform to the character of Christ. This makes sense. We follow Jesus in order to become like him. And, we pray for the Spirit's help.
But, the Spirit leads Phillip down to a desert road to meet a stranger and share the good news about Jesus. This leading is more literal and less subtle. And, Jesus was led by the Spirit into a place without food or shelter to face strong temptation. At Oak Ridge, we seem less likely to talk about the Spirit overtly directing us to stop and go into a grocery store where we've never shopped. Even less likely would be a conversation where someone claimed the Holy Spirit led them into a place of suffering to enable greater dependence on God. Why?
Can we view job loss or a nudge to begin weekly fasting or a pang over watching too much television as the Spirit leading us?
