The theme for this week's readings is "making our own bread." The Satan tempted Jesus with a suggestion that he make himself some bread. Does eating stone-bread count against a personal fast?
When the Israelites were whining in the wilderness, neither Moses nor God were concerned that they wanted food. The underlying problem was that they wanted to go back to Egypt. This successful farmer in Luke 12 is not sinful because he understands how to store a great deal of grain. His underlying problem is that he wants a life of selfish consumption while "taking life easy."
The 40 Days give us an opportunity to check our lives for such hidden motives.
