A Closer Look

Acts 5:1-11
Today's discussion question: How was the couple's lie a test of the Spirit (vs. 9)?

Does it make sense that Ananias and Sapphira didn't really think this through?  I mean, they made a plan, but did they really ask themselves whether the Holy Spirit would notice.  They assumed the Apostles and Elders and growing Jerusalem congregation would just be happy to get the money and maybe be impressed with their personal sacrifice.

Luke records Peter's penetrating questions for our benefit.  To Ananias, "...how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money..."  To Sapphira, "How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?" Luke wants us to take a deeper look.  Look closely at this couple.  Look deeply in your own heart.

With what does the adversary fill our heart in order to distract us from the potential wickedness of our actions?  In what ways might we test the Lord without thinking it through?
