John 20:24-31
Today's discussion question: Do you think Thomas moved passed his need for proof?

The theme this week contrasts testing and trusting.  We have no doubt that Thomas had a trust issue. (pun intended) But, Thomas trusted.  In fact, he may have been no different than the other disciples. He trusted what all of us would trust: his senses.

He had not seen Jesus as they had. He had not heard Jesus reply to their questions.  Yet, they offered only those two senses as proof.  Thomas insists on at least a "third witness" to testify.  He wanted to touch Jesus. Thomas put the theory of the resurrection to the test. Jesus gladly obliged.

But please, do not read Thomas' reply as a confirmation that Jesus passed the test.  Proof of the resurrection may have moved Thomas to declare Jesus his Lord.  Something else made Thomas declare Jesus, "my God."  Perhaps Thomas saw compassion in Jesus' eyes.  Maybe Thomas deeply felt a connection to the creator that cannot be explained.

What do you think?
