The discussion question on our daily reading list may be unfair. The Levite and the priest both likely excused their avoidance of their suffering neighbor on the basis of laws regarding ceremonial cleanness. In that case, they would be obeying Scripture. This raises an important nuance. Living by the Word of God is not always the same as obeying Scripture.
We understand that one can obey the letter of the law without investing oneself in the spirit intended. Jesus challenged the religious folks of his day for ignoring weightier matters of the law and setting aside the Word of God for the traditions of men. This expert however feeds on a combination of the Hebrew Shema (Hear oh Israel...) and the love your neighbor command. Unfortunately, he seems to be looking for an easy way out.
Chew on this reading for a while. Swallow the Word that calls us to love God and neighbor. Digest it. How will these thoughts bring us life?
