Luke 19:1-10

TEXT

What is it about being in the presence of Jesus that makes Zacchaeus to want give half his possessions to the poor and pay back anyone he has cheated? There is obviously more to the conversation than what Luke provides here, but I don't get the sense that Jesus ever asks Zacchaeus to this. The "ruler" from Mark 10 comes to Jesus and asks what he can do to inherit eternal life, but Zacchaeus is just trying to find out who Jesus was (v. 3). There is just something about Jesus that draws the unexpected people of his time to do some really amazing things. I'd like to think I would have been a Zacchaeus, someone who is just trying to find out what is going on and then making a drastic change in my life and following Jesus. Im probably more like the other people in the story, standing and questioning Jesus, but I want to become more like Zacchaeus…

We decided that if Jesus came to our home for dinner, after He left we would sell our house and move to Como.

I love the family time we have been having! Life with three boys is nearly always an unpredictable adventure, and these times have proved no different. They have had some incredibly insightful observations and our four year old's perspective touches our hearts and often fills the room with laughter. Tonight, in the middle of the discussion, he stood up on his stool, and ripped his robe open baring his chest like a super hero. We're not sure why, but it was pretty entertaining. Then as we were talking about what changed in Zaccheus after his encounter with Jesus, Elijah ran to the refrigerator and retrieved his Sunday School picture of "Jesus talking to the boy in the tree". His proud parents were thrilled that he made the connection! The next few minutes were a mini-debate about whether Zaccheus was a man or a boy - or a boy with a beard (Denver's contribution). As Van shared in his post, there was a more serious conclusion drawn by the end of our discussion. I know I for one will always treasure seeing the glimpses of my boys' hearts in these discussions. And listening to pint sized heroes talk about boys-with-beards being changed by Jesus.

With our boys, we had to sing the song about the "wee little man" Zaccheus, hand motions and all. But then talked about how his heart was changed just because Jesus wanted to come to his house. Maybe we need to let Jesus in our house more often and see how much our hearts would be changed. They certainly have been over the last week and a half...
