Treasures New and Old

Today's Text: Matthew 13:51-52
(The bookmark transposed 51 to 15)

This is the last of what some scholars call the "loss for the Kingdom" parables in Matthew 13.  Let me summarize the 23 page article I just read on this parable into a few bullet points.

  • "brings out" in verse 52 offers an ancient and persistent mistranslation of the Greek ekballei which is overwhelmingly translated through out the Bible with words generally meaning  expulsion.  It literally means, throws out.
  • in verse 44 the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure someone sells all they own to obtain
  • in verse 45 the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant searching
  • in verse 52 "every scribe (teacher) trained for the Kingdom" is like a head-of-household throwing out new and old treasure, presumably to make room for something of greater value, the Kingdom.
Does that change how you read this?
Remember, Lent can be for you a time of cleaning out the accumulated "treasure" that divides our allegiance to Christ.

Ben and I are spiritual enriched by the Lent review. We read all of Matthew 13:15-52. I was touched by the footnote on verse 13:24 "The kingdom is not a geographic location, but a spiritual realm where God rules and we share in his eternal life. We join that kingdom when we trust in Christ as our Savior.

When I hear that some word is a mistranslation my confidence is threatened. Makes me wonder how many mistranslations are in the Bible and how it affects our eternal salvation if we do not grasp the mistranslation. I have confidence in the directives given in 2 Timothy 3:16-17. That we are equipped for every good work and then 1 Timothy 6:6 But Godliness with contentment is great gain.

I have prayed and studied that I might serve with confidence and most of all peace of mind which is akin to contentment. Azalee Tatum
